Michael Crosby

As an artist I am constantly experimenting with an array of materials to create my original paintings, drawings, assemblages and sculptures. I have had education, apprenticed, and have had training in liberal, gallery and graphic arts. My art has been described as: modern primitive, outsider, surreal, visionary, abstract and organic. My vibrant paintings are filled with intricate patterns and details while my photography and pen and ink drawings reflect my interest in figural illustration. Much of my art contains hidden words and images that have special meaning to me.

My work is shown and collected internationally and can be found in galleries, businesses, boutiques and private collections in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Denmark and Brazil.

Art Groups & Affiliations: LA Artists Network, Midwest Creatives, Fanatical Artists Guild, D.A.d.A, Mid Michigan Artists Guild, Surreal Visionary Art Forum.

Current and Past Venues: Lansing Art Gallery, Creole Gallery, Otherwise Gallery, Temple Club, Innovations by Thomas J, Spiral, Spyhole Gallery, Scene Metrospace Art Gallery, Burtrum's of Grand Blanc, Tense Forms Group, The Fabric Lab and I have also been commissioned by the city of Lansing as well as other Lansing area collectors.

Review from The Fabric Lab's Haute Couture Art/Fashion Show

Artist Michael Crosby has emerged on the fine art scene with an undeniably haute couture edge in both his work and persona.   In post-Warhol modern art, the individual has become, for better or worse, as important as the work itself.  With a background in computer graphic design and typography, metal sculptural commissions, and large-scale mural projects for private collections, Crosby provides work that is both visually stunning and personally reflective of both his own thinking and that of his many collectors throughout the United States, Canada, Ireland, Denmark and Brazil.

Crosby is one of the few contemporary artists able to translate his take on the world into one that the viewer can identify with immediately, while retaining a unique style and never succumbing to the subconscious pressure to become derivative   – as with much of the work currently seen in the confines of both high art and couture atelier.  His new work combines elements of both the attention to color, line and texture of fashion drawing and emotional resonance of portraiture.   Influenced by such designers as Betsey Johnson, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, Crosby has hit his stride in his classic fashion drawing – with sketches that capture the jewel-toned intensity of the current collections and Crosby's own painterly soft touch.   He is tipping his hat, ever so slightly, to the world of costuming for theater and film – without losing his grip and spinning off into the nether realms of complete spectacle.   Crosby's work is clearly that of a whimsical, globally aware artist that appreciates the personalities of those around him – one can see this within every layer of paint, each pose of his muse.

Crosby's most recent show, in conjunction with The Fabric Lab's Haute Couture Art/Fashion Show during Denver's upcoming Fashion Week, comes during a blitz of activity for the artist – including several solo and group shows this year in Chicago, Detroit, and the mid-Michigan area, where the artist resides and creates his work.
